Program helps students practice English in a unique way

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS (KCTV) -

There's a new program coming to the Shawnee Mission School District that could have a huge impact on students.

Itzel Mojica, 6, said there are many reasons why she enjoys the one-on-one time with her special friend, Mary Sinclair.

"We like to read every day and we like to color and we like to eat," said the first grader.

Mojica is from Mexico and she has been working hard to master English and succeed at Rosehill Elementary School in Lenexa, KS and that's where Sinclair comes in. Sinclair is a mentor who volunteers once a week with Mojica.

"It's a really powerful way and valuable way to contribute back and support kids. It's amazing what a half hour a week will do over an extended period of time," Sinclair said.

The Shawnee Mission School District has nearly 3,000 students whose first language is something other than English. Of those students, 76 percent speak Spanish at home so the district is now part of a new pilot program called Learning Across Language.

The goal of the pilot program is to pair up the students with an adult mentor who will help them feel at ease as they practice their new language skills.

"Not only are they learning things in the classroom, but they are learning a whole new language and that can be really intimidating for some of these students. They don't want to be made fun of. So it's a great way to practice and not be ashamed if they make a mistake," said Randy Lopez, the Director of the ELL and Migrant Program.

Sinclair said Mojica is already making big strides as she sounds out new words with confidence. If someone asks the first grader about her special relationship, she has two words that sum up her feelings towards her mentor.

"Thank you," she said.

"She is going to go places for sure and I can't wait to see how she evolves over time," Sinclair said. "She has a lot going for her."
