More people using probiotics to stay healthy

FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

Yogurt, sauerkraut and feta cheese - they all contain bacteria known as probiotics that are a booming business as more people use them to stay healthy.

People might have seen the ads stating eat Activia and feel better.

The ingredient in such yogurt or other drinks and supplements is probiotics, which means pro-life.

Probiotics put good bacteria back into the digestive system.

Something experts say Americans need in particular.

"Research is showing us there is a lot of benefit to the probiotics, especially in our global, industrialized American diets where we are eating a lot of processed and prepackaged foods.  Maybe we're not getting all the nutrients we need," said dietitian Barb Able.

According to the National Institute of Health, spending on probiotics has tripled since 1994.

Able helps patients in the hospital find the right diet for their needs.

Among the benefits are improved digestive health, a decrease in diarrhea caused by antibiotic therapy, protection against infection, boosting the immune system, and even decreasing the risk of certain cancers.

Able says probiotics are good for people of any age, but especially those prone to infections or illness.

Probiotics come in many forms including drinks, yogurt and supplements.

When buying a supplement though, Able says read the label carefully.

"If you choose a supplement, make sure it has two billion micro organisms. Look at how it needs to be stored, whether refrigerated or viable at room temperature. Also look to see if it is viable until the time of production, or the end of the shelf life."

Probiotics are better when active until the end of the shelf life, and people can find them at most health food stores.

And for kids, probiotics now come in packets you can pour into their water or juice.
