A Leavenworth County family is trying to figure out how their dog was shot with an arrow. The dog did not survive.
The dog's owner said there is no way this was an accident, and they want to know who would have done this to such a loving animal.
"She was absolutely distraught. She was beside herself. I couldn't even hardly talk to her," said Garrett Searcy.
In the afternoon of New Year's Eve, Searcy was at work when he got a call from his wife. Something had happened to the family's 11-year-old yellow lab, Max.
"I came home to find he'd been shot with an arrow," said Searcy.
The Searcys live outside Tonganoxie in rural Leavenworth County. Their property line butts up to a state park, where hunting it allowed.
Max and the family's 4-year-old black lab, Ellie, often roam the woods. After talking with the game warden and the sheriff, Searcy believes Max was in the woods and most likely spooked some deer a hunter had a line on so, out of frustration, Max was shot.
"It was absolutely intentional. It wasn't an accident," he said.
Searcy said he knew the minute he saw Max, he wasn't going to make it.
They got Max to the vet where he was put to sleep.
The pain Max went through in the final hours only adds to Searcy's frustration, his need to know why this happened and who was behind such a cruel act.
"He's been part of the family for 11 years. He's a member of the family. It cut pretty deep right away," said Searcy.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office at 913-682-5724.
