Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Kansas City, KS.

The two lane road that runs right in front of Tom Murphy's KCK home in the 4000 block of North 55th Street was the scene of the officer-involved shooting around 3 a.m. Sunday.

The road in KCK is back open Sunday,  but for several hours overnight it was shutdown as police investigated a fatal shooting after police say an officer got in a struggle with a suspect and opened fire.

"We just saw the lights up the street you know. The police going up and down, and we came out to see if one of our horses had gotten out and gotten run over," said resident Tom Murphy.

But this time, this police call was not about his farm animals running loose. It was much more serious.

"At this point, it is an officer-involved shooting.  It is still under investigation, and until we have more factual info ... we can't release anything else," said officer Brittanie Pruitt with Kansas City, KS, Police Department.

Police say the preliminary investigation indicates the officer on duty did a pedestrian check on a suspicious person in the area. There was a struggle between the suspect and the officer, and that is when the officer discharged his gun killing the suspect. The name and age of the suspect is not being released at this time until his family can be notified.

"They just asked if we had seen anything suspicious down around in here," said Murphy.

Murphy says he went to bed around 9 p.m. and didn't hear or see anything.

He has lived in his KCK home for 27 years, and says he has always enjoyed raising his farm animals in the secluded part of Wyandotte County without any major problems.

"Everybody here knows each other and gets along.  Normally we don't have any problems at all," said Murphy.

The 15-year veteran officer involved in the incident was not hurt.

Right now, the officer is on routine paid leave as the Kansas City, KS, Critical Incident Team completes their investigation.
