Man in custody after deadly Olathe shooting

OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

In the neighborhood near 153rd Street and Ridgeview Road, residents are still stunned at the deadly violence that struck Wednesday afternoon.

One neighbor said she remains in total disbelief.

"Steve has been like a family member, we've been here for over 20 years. He helped with my kids when they were small," Denise Miller said.

It's reasons like those that Miller said she's giving her 59-year-old neighbor, the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the death of a live-in caretaker.

The man's 68-year-old wife, suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.

Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, Miller said she heard some yelling next door and, shortly thereafter, she said police littered the neighborhood.

"I looked over and saw Steve and thought maybe he was trying to get the dogs in, so I came downstairs to try and grab the two of them and see if I couldn't help out and that's when the police arrived and told me to step back into the house," Miller said.

Inside the home, police found the body 54-year-old Susanne Goslin who, according to state records, is a registered nurse. Miller said Goslin moved into the home last spring and, since then, emotions have run high at the neighboring household.

Court records show Goslin was divorced from her husband last year and their shared home was foreclosed on earlier this year. Goslin's ex-husband was emotional when KCTV5's Mark Boyle spoke with him Thursday and he didn't want to comment on his ex-wife's death.

But Dan and Mary Taylor of Shawnee are former neighbors of the Goslins and said they knew Susanne as a nice woman with a proud husband. They said the family of four were trustworthy neighbors whom they knew well for more than 15 years.

"We were babysitting their two little boys before they moved in over here. Even before they moved in, we were babysitting the two little boys and so they were good neighbors for several years," Dan Taylor said.

In Olathe, police are holding the man on first degree murder charges and won't say if he was involved. But Miller, a long-time neighbor and friend, said she won't believe he's responsible for Goslin's death until it's proven otherwise.

"I feel sorry for him, I feel sorry for Molly, and I don't know what went on and it's not the time of year for all of this," she said.

Miller said she was asked to take care of Molly who is having trouble getting around because of her illness, but she recommended Molly stay at a medical facility where her needs can be better met.

The Johnson County District Attorney's Office said they're waiting on charges until the autopsy is complete.

Police said they are still investigating the case, and ask that anyone with information regarding the investigation to call the Olathe Police Department at 913-782-0720 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
