A man and woman in their 20s suffered serious injuries when the driver lost control of their vehicle Tuesday night.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at 7:10 p.m. on westbound U.S. 40 just west of Powell Road.
Clinton N. Young, 26, of Blue Springs, was driving the 1998 Honda on westbound U.S. 40, troopers said. Young lost control and the car went off the right side of the road and hit a telephone poll. The car traveled down an embankment and overturned.
Both Young and his passenger, Amber M. Loulos, 22, of Lone Jack, were thrown from the vehicle. They were rushed to the nearby Centerpoint Hospital in Independence.
The investigation continues. The Independence Fire Department, Independence Police Department, Lee's Summit Police Department and Jackson County Sheriff's Office assisted.
A portion of the highway was closed for a time.
