Officers deal with loss of one of their own

Posted: Updated:

Sergeant David Enzbrenner's fellow Atchison officers were given the weekend off to grieve the loss of one of their own.

Enzbrenner served and protected the city of Atchison for 24 years. He made his last call Friday afternoon.

Enzbrenner was helping code enforcement on a nuisance ordinance violation when he was fatally shot.

"At this point we don't think Sgt. Enzbrenner had any indication the individual had come up from behind, " said Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon.

Calhoon was part of the team that investigated the shooting death of a man he knew quite well.

"He's going to be missed not only by his brothers in law enforcement but everyone he worked with in the court system and the community; he was an all around great guy," said Calhoon.

On the Officer Down Memorial Page, a posting from a co-worker reads:

"Thank you brother for adding a smile and laughter to the squad room and the many times you said, ‘I got it,' at shift-change so I could go home to my family on time. Prayers with your family. Rest in peace."

It was posted by Sergeant K.W. with the Atchison Police Department.

The county district attorney said he knew the shooter, Skyler Barbee, a man they recently threw in jail for assaulting a law enforcement officer. District Attorney Jerry Kuckelman said the fallen officer was good at his job, but gave back so much more to the city of Atchison.

"A man of the caliber of David Enzbrenner, it's a huge hit. He's heavily involved in the community through youth activities and his kid's sports. David Enzbrenner was an all around quality man, he will be sorely missed," said Kuckelman.

The sergeant leaves behind a wife and three daughters.
