Father and son reunite on Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

The Kansas City International Airport was the backdrop for an emotional reunion between a father and son Thursday that was five decades in the making.

Chris McGuyer never knew he had an older brother. When he found out, he set out to find the brother he'd never met.

"I didn't want to hire an investigator so I just started trying some of these family websites and things like this and the funny thing is I ultimately found him off of Facebook," McGuyer said.

After sending messages back and forth, he finally met his brother last summer. Thursday was a chance for McGuyer's father, Jerry, to meet the son he hadn't seen in more than 52 years.

"I'm just so very grateful I'm able to do this for my dad because he's 76, almost 77," McGuyer said. "I didn't want to have anything happen before he could meet Mike again."

"I can't hardly wait to grab him and give him a hug and welcome him back," said Jerry McGuyer, the father.

While McGuyer's kids held signs welcoming their uncle Mike to Kansas City, the elder McGuyer anxiously looked on, ready to hug the son he last saw when he was only 2-years-old.  Mike was that age when his mother and Jerry divorced and he and his mother moved away.  Jerry had other children, including McGuyer, with another woman and never saw Mike again, until this day.

Thanksgiving for the McGuyer's this year will be one for the record books.

"There will no Thanksgiving like this one, never," said Jerry.
