Woman dies as possible elder abuse investigation continues

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

An elderly woman has died as an investigation continues into whether her death was a result of abuse.

Independence police are releasing few details other than to confirm the woman, who was in her early 70s, died earlier this week.

She was rushed to the hospital last week. No charges have been filed in the case, but the living conditions inside the home were deplorable enough that the city of Independence has declared the home unsafe and ordered no one to live in it.

A man was inside the home Friday afternoon despite the notice on the house from city officials saying it was unsafe. He declined comment when asked if the conditions inside the home contributed to the woman's death.

The notice on the door said the home was unsanitary, the electrical work was inadequate, the walls and ceilings were in disrepair as well as other issues.

Police spent 17 hours inside the home last week, rattling neighbors. Neighbors told KCTV5 that they did not realize the woman lived in the home after her husband's death and did not know whether her caretaker was a relative or not.
