An investigation is underway after an elderly Independence woman was rushed to the hospital.
Authorities confirmed detectives are working to determine if this is a case of elder abuse.
Events began unfolding Thursday night after an ambulance rushed the woman in her early 70s to the hospital. Police were on scene in the 300 block of Peck Street for more than 17 hours Thursday and Friday. Crime scene technicians wore masks, gloves and boot covers while processing evidence.
No charges have been filed as of Friday afternoon and the woman remains hospitalized. Her condition wasn't available.
Some neighbors told KCTV5 that they thought a younger appearing man lived alone in the residence.
"I really thought that he lived alone. I never saw anyone," Yvonne Morris said. "Shortly after I got home, police showed up at the house. They taped off the front and back of the house."
Morris and residents are shaken by the police activity.
"It's a sad situation," Morris said.
