KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A 10-year-old boy is in serious condition at Children's Mercy Hospital after he was shot in the head by his own grandfather outside a KCK store.

Police said it appears to be a horrible accident that happened outside of Cabela's at 10300 Cabela Dr. in the Village West Shopping Center.

A single bullet hole could be seen in the SUV the man was driving with his grandson. Police said what was supposed to be a fun day of shopping at the popular hunting store suddenly took a turn for the worse.

"He was going to take an antique rifle to get it appraised at the store. Prior to doing that he was unloading the weapon in the back of his SUV and, the weapon accidentally went off going through the vehicle and struck his grandson who was outside of the vehicle at the time," said Captain Ron Kaminski with the KCK Police.

Police said the antique weapon was a 1900s .22 rifle.

At 12:45 p.m. Friday, police got the call about shots fired. When they arrived on scene, they found the 10-year-old boy injured but he was talking at the time. The boy was rushed to the hospital as police called his relatives to inform them of the accident.

Police said it's not uncommon for customers to bring weapons to the store to be checked out.

"Anybody, before they can bring a weapon, it has to be unloaded before they can bring it store," said Kaminski.

An employee outside the store heard the shot and he raced over to help the victim. At this point, police said no charges will be filed against the grandfather.

"He's pretty upset as one would expect. Thoughts and prayers are with the family we hope everything turns out OK. As soon as he's interviewed, he will be released to go to hospital to be with grandson," said Kaminski.

There is no word yet if the boy is undergoing surgery or if the bullet simply grazed his head.
