KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Chiefs' chances of repeating as AFC West champions took a crippling blow Monday.

Coach Todd Haley confirmed that running back Jamaal Charles is out for the season. The Chiefs announced Monday that Charles will be placed on the injured reserve list.

Charles tore his ACL as he was running out of bounds during the first quarter. He collided with the Lions' mascot.

"I know he is hurting pretty good inside," Haley said. He said Charles' injury is unfortunate because he has worked hard and had "high hopes."

The Chiefs lost 48-3, bringing their record to 0-2 for the season. The Chiefs travel to San Diego to play the Chargers this weekend. The Chargers traveled to New England and lost on Sunday to the Patriots.

Chiefs lost starting safety Eric Berry in the home opener to the Buffalo Bill. Tight end Tony Moeaki was lost for the season during training camp.

The Chiefs must play better fundamentals and come together as a team in the wake of the injury losses, Haley said. He said injuries are part of the game.

"We've got to pull together as a team," he said. "We must step up as a team and move forward and just find a way to play better football in general."

Haley said his team has had "two rough weeks," but he knows his players care.

"I believe in them," he said.
