Tightwad Bank petitions move to Merriam

READING, Kan. (AP) - An eastern Kansas town recovering from severe tornado damage has suffered another blow.

The owners of the Tightwad Bank have petitioned the banking commission for permission to move from Reading to the Kansas City suburb of Merriam. The former Reading State Bank became a branch office of Tightwad Bank in 2008.

The Emporia Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/nv1uX6) that Barbara Schlobohm, spokeswoman for the Reading recovery effort, says the bank's move will be permanent. But she says several people have expressed interest in bringing a new bank to Reading.

On May 21, the community was hit by a tornado that killed one person and destroyed more than half of the city's 101 homes, nearly all of its businesses and the post office.
