Coal train derails in NE Kansas

An investigation is underway on a train derailment that happened Monday morning in northeast Kansas.

The derailment happened at 3:50 a.m. Monday in Emmett, KS, which is about 45 minutes northwest of Topeka, and about eight miles north of St. Mary's, KS.

According to a Union Pacific spokesman, the train was traveling from Wyoming, when 56 cars of the train derailed in Pottawatomie County.

The train cars were carrying coal.

No injuries were reported. 

Crews have been working all day to clean up the mess and replace the damaged track.

Officials did not know how much of the track needed to be replaced.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
