An Oak Park, Ill. man has created an online petition asking for Sesame Street to marry Bert and Ernie.
Sesame Street has never identified their characters are gay, even though Bert and Ernie have lived together for many years.
The petition, created by Lair Scott, had over 1,700 signatures as of Wednesday.
Scott believes that allowing the characters to marry or introducing a transgender character could help bullied and struggling LGBT kids.
In the petition overview, Scott writes: "In this horrific age of LGBT kids taking their own lives, they need to know that they ARE BEAUTIFUL and their lives are worth living."
Sesame Street, in an undated clip, addressed the issue of marriage. They never defined a marriage between a man and a woman.
Sesame Street issued this statement:
"Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.
"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."
Season 42 of Sesame Street Premieres September 26 on PBS KIDS®
