Anthony Sowell's lawyers try to use plea letter to sway jurors
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
Just days before jurors begin deliberating the death penalty phase for convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell, his lawyers have filed a copy of a letter showing how they tried to strike a plea deal before the high-profile trial started.
In the letter, Sowell offered to serve life in prison and the maximum time on all charges. He also offered to surrender any future appeals. Cuyahoga County Prosecutors rejected the offer. They felt that if anyone deserved the death penalty, it was Anthony Sowell.
Friday, a judge ruled that the letter could not be shown to jurors during the sentencing phase.
The 51-year-old was convicted of murdering eleven women and burying their bodies in and around his Imperial Avenue home last week.
