Lots of animal lovers showed up to the KCMO animal shelter looking for a furry friend to add to the family.
The shelter held its spring adoption event Saturday, trying to unite nearly 1,000 dogs and several cats with new owners. There were breeds of all kinds available for adoption. Shelter manager Dennis Moriarty says, despite the fact the Spring adoption is a regular event, there is a more practical reason for having the event now.
"We really, really are overcrowded. More animals keep coming in and adoptions have dropped off dramatically and I don't know if that's because of the time of year, economic situation or whatever. And then there were a couple of other pet adoption events last weekend by other organizations," said Moriarty.
The shelter is not a no-kill shelter so any animals not adopted may eventually be euthanized. The shelter is also open Monday through Saturday, regularly, for those wanting to adopt a dog, or cat, although the special discounting may not be available.
