Michael Coleman is KCTV5's sports director and a Kansas City area native, having been raised in Lawrence.

Michael attended college on a football scholarship, played at Coffeyville Junior College and Southern Illinois. He was also was a college sprinter on the track team. He received his B.A. in speech communications.

Before coming to KCTV5, Michael worked in Woodbury Long Island as News 12's sports director/anchor, where he was the weekday sports anchor. He also hosted an award-winning high school sports show called "The Rush," which aired weekly. In 2010, Michael was named a McDonald's New York broadcast Legend, an honor that recognizes broadcasters who've made an impact in the New York metro market.

Michael has also spent time working in Texas, where he won best sportscast awards from the Associated Press.

Michael has covered Super Bowls, World Series, Final Fours, NBA Playoffs and more. But Michael also believes that local high school athletes deserve exposure, and makes it a point to also follow the area schools.

While in New York, Michael was involved with the Brain Injury Institute, which follows athletes who've been impacted by concussions, and how they cope today.

In his spare time, Michael tries to stay away from sports to see what the rest of the world is doing. He is fond of chess and reading, and a big fan of jazz.

Michael grew up watching the Kansas City sports scene and is glad be around familiar territory that includes tradition-rich sports teams.
