Katie Horner joined KCTV5 in 1994, and her dedication to forecasting, storm tracking and serving the public continues to grow. She became KCTV5's chief meteorologist in 1998. Katie is well-known in Kansas City for her tireless, non-stop severe weather coverage. She persevered through a relentless, live 15-hour severe weather broadcast in March 2006, reporting on at least 12 tornadoes that hit within KCTV5's coverage area.
"I will never forget running home under a green sky to the sound of tornado sirens when I was a child in Bellevue, Nebraska. We huddled in our basement many times as tornadoes threatened our neighborhood. After storms passed, our church was always involved in the cleanup efforts. Those memories are fresh in my mind when I am on the air helping our viewers through severe weather. A calm, informative, caring voice can be the most helpful thing when chaos is all around."
Katie has written a parent's resource book, "Brainstorming," a guide to help parents help their children through severe weather. It is available online at her Web site and is available at area book stores. Katie has also teamed up with Mad Science to bring an interactive weather show, "Weather, Wise and Wonderful to area school children. For more, click here.
But it hasn't been all serious weather coverage for Katie. While on the air, she has enjoyed flying with the Blue Angels, the Red Baron and on the Goodyear Blimp. She's also enjoyed skydiving, hot air ballooning, bungee jumping and swimming in a shark tank. She has competed in many triathlons but her real passion is cycling. She has completed the MS 150, Wheels to Westin and Ride the Rockies…a 500 mile bike ride through Colorado's mountain passes.
Katie is very active in the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure and the American Heart Association. Katie was honored as one of Kansas City's, "Most Influential Woman" in 2010 by KC Business Magazine. The most amazing thing she feels she has ever done as an on-air personality was organizing thousands of people to make a human flag right after 9/11.
Katie was born in Nelsonville, Ohio. Katie is the fourth child of Tom Stockdale, a minister, and Pat Stockdale, a social worker. They lived in Ohio, Kansas, Nebraska and Washington, D.C.
In 1988, Katie's parents moved to St. Louis, and Katie moved to Pensacola, Fla., to complete her bachelor's degree in public relations and marketing from the University of West Florida. Her career in TV began in 1989 at WEAR TV3 in Pensacola,Fl. While working fulltime she went back to school to study meteorology. She became certified by the American Meteorology Society in 1996. Later, she served on the board of the AMS from 2005-2008. She lives in Kansas City, Mo., with her daughter, Chelsea, and their two young girls, Anna and Ava. Though Katie still enjoys training for triathlons, playing "get-you-get-you" with her children sometimes is all the cardio she needs!
