Dealers receive parts to fix recalled Toyotas

A Japanese media outlet is reporting that Toyota is now recalling its Prius Hybrid over problems with the brakes. However, the automaker denies the claim.

This comes at a time when the company is still reeling from two massive recalls affecting more than eight million vehicles over pedal problems.

One of them is an issue the Channel 4 I-Team exposed two years ago that involved Tacoma trucks suddenly accelerating.

To repair the latest recall, dealerships are starting to receive repair kits to fix gas pedals that are sticking to the floor of the vehicle.

Beaman Toyota said they have received hundred of calls a day from concerned Toyota drivers after this year's global recall involving sticking gas pedals.

Wednesday, Beaman got its first shipment of parts from Toyota to make the repair. The dealer said it is doing its best to reassure its customers.

"It's not going to go out today and stick on you automatically. You are going to notice it's a little hard to push. You are going to notice when you push on the gas, maybe it idles a couple hundred rpms higher than it used to," said Chris Back of Beaman.

With a gas pedal in hand and a few measurements, the fix is relatively simple. A small piece of metal remedies a huge public relations problem for Toyota.

"It makes sure there is constant pressure on the return spring that will never allow the pedal to stick," said Back.

Beaman estimates it will have to fix between 4,000 and 6,000 cars as a result of the recall. Thursday, the list was more than 160 long, but already 75 have been finished and are back on the road.

"We are offering extended hours, trying to see if that's sufficient. We are going to offer doing these all day on Saturdays," said Back.

The fix takes about 15 minutes. The big issue is the limited parts that Toyota is shipping to dealers.

Beaman still hasn't received any parts for the floor mat recall.

"It's huge just simply from it developed fairly quickly. Then it took a little longer to get accurate information to give our customers, and we have a huge obligation to our customers," said Back.

Toyota will start sending recall letters to affected customers Friday. The part needed for repairs varies in size for each model being recalled. So it could take days or weeks, depending on whether the dealership has that part.

The best thing to do is to call your dealership and give them your VIN number and model. They should be able to tell you if they have the part that's needed for your car.
