The Kansas City Chiefs have released running back Larry Johnson, the team announced on its Web site Monday.

Johnson had been suspended for two weeks by the team after remarks he made on his Twitter account bashing head coach Todd Haley and using homophobic slurs.

Johnson was also heard using a homophobic remark toward reporters in the Chiefs locker room on Oct. 26 after reporters tried to ask him about the Twitter comments.

Johnson played in 75 games with the Chiefs and rushed for 5,996 yards, averaging 4.4 yard per carry. Johnson rushed for 55 touchdowns and scored another six receiving. Johnson had 1,369 yard receiving in his Chiefs career.

Johnson had 30 100-yard rushing games and also had two 100-yard receiving games.

Johnson set an NFL single-season record with 416 rushing attempts in 2006.

Johnson was drafted in 2003 by President and General Manager Carl Peterson with the 27th pick in the draft out of Penn State.
