KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A question on renewing a tax that goes to an anti-drug program is one of the key issues in Jackson County, Mo., one of several metro counties and cities with elections Tuesday. The anti-drug tax, is called COMBAT, which stands for Community Backed Anti-Drug Sales Tax, has been in existence for 20 years. The tax works by funding narcotics officers and other drug programs in Jackson County. The county says the tax is working and they want to renew it. Others say it's a waste of money."We urge you to vote yes for this tax," Alvin Brooks, former Kansas City Council member and community activist, said. "It's not a new tax, but a tax that will continue on to help others."Opponents are wondering why the tax needs to continue."Now they are coming around asking taxpayers to vote for it," Bob Gough said. "What's going to be different this time around?"Also on the ballot today, voters in Clay County will consider a sales tax to get more sheriff's officers. The county already has a 1/8-cent tax that goes to law enforcement. If passed the tax would extend for 12 years.Polls in Kansas City opened at 6 a.m. and stay open through 7 p.m.KCTV5.com will have a complete list of election results Tuesday night.
