If the candidate you pick for president loses this November, go ahead and have a drink. You won’t be alone.

According to a new poll, 26 percent of conservatives said they will drink more if Sen. Barack Obama is elected. Conversely, 20 percent of liberals said they will drink more if Sen. John McCain is elected.

Survey: Drinking Buddy?

Those results are from Survey USA, a national research firm.

The poll also asked a question that many political observers will find very intriguing: with whom would you rather have a drink with, Obama or McCain?

On that question Obama nudged McCain, 44 percent to 42 percent. Thirteen percent were unsure. The margin of error for all questions was plus or minus 4.5 percent.

On that same question:

  • 74 percent of black, 56 percent of Hispanic and 39 percent of white respondents chose Obama.
  • 49 percent of white, 18 percent of black, and 16 percent of Hispanic respondents chose McCain.
  • 51 percent of all respondents ages 21 to 34 chose Obama
  • 55 percent of all respondents over age 65 chose McCain
  • 77 percent of Republican respondents chose McCain
  • 83 percent of Democrats chose Obama
  • Independents were split equally at 43 percent for each candidate

The Survey USA poll was sponsored by Drinkin’ Mate Hangover Defense, a patented formula that claims to counteract the negative side effects of alcohol.
