Chiefs Cut K Jay Feely

POSTED: 10:09 am CDT August 27, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Chiefs have released kicker Jay Feely, ending his stint with Kansas City after only two days of practice.

Feely was released by the Miami Dolphins earlier this month after losing his job to rookie free agent Dan Carpenter. He signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs on Monday but, after only two days trying out against kickers Nick Novak and Connor Barth, the club cut Feely loose prior to its preseason finale against the St. Louis Rams on Thursday.

"We're shocked, baffled, disappointed," Feely's agent, Glenn Schwartzman, told the Kansas City Star.

"While no one promised him the job, we were under the impression he would be given a better opportunity to win it. If they're going to base it off two days of kicking, they probably shouldn't have signed him. It makes no sense to make a decision about Jay without letting him kick in the preseason game," Schwartzman told the Star.

"Had we known he wasn't even going to get that chance, we never would have signed with the Chiefs."

In his lone season with the Dolphins, Feely connected on 21-of-23 field goal tries to set a team record with a 91.3 percent accuracy rate. He also drilled each of his 26 point-after touchdown attempts during Miami's disastrous 1-15 season.

Feely signed a three-year deal with Miami in March of 2007 after spending two years with the New York Giants. He played his first four NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

In 112 games, the Michigan product has made 80.8 percent of his field goal attempts and all but two of his 251 point-after tries.
