Favre Asks For His Release

POSTED: 5:57 pm CDT August 5, 2008

(Sports Network) - Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has reportedly asked the team for his release.

ESPN.com reported that Favre acknowledged that he was at loggerheads with the organization and believed the "best thing for this team is for us to part ways."

"We're at a stalemate," Favre told the Web site. "(Coach) Mike McCarthy and I both agreed last night that me being out there is a distraction and will continue to be a distraction. We all know the reason I'm here is because the commissioner (Roger Goodell) reinstated me so we have a lot of things to figure out. It's simple and complicated, both at the same time."

Following the morning statement, Favre left practice without participating, saying that another meeting was in the works with Packers general manager Ted Thompson and club president Mark Murphy.

Favre also said the team once again rejected his request to talk to teams about a trade within the NFC North.

Favre is friends with Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress, as well as offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, and it's believed the signal caller would like to play with Minnesota this season.

McCarthy, the Packers' head coach, responded to the situation in a press conference late Tuesday.

"My whole purpose of talking to Brett was to have a long healthy conversation. I thought it was brutally honest," he said. "We agreed to disagree, we stood on opposite sides of the fence on a number of issues. My question was, 'Is he ready to play football for the Green Bay Packers?' His mindset based on things that have happened is that's not where he was. With that, we did not really move ahead.

"I'm not doing the PR thing anymore," McCarthy added when asked if he was in favor of Favre returning and being an active member of the team. "I'm the head coach of the football team. He needs to jump on the train and let's go, but I have to keep the train moving and he respects that.

"I said all along Aaron Rodgers was the starting quarterback of my football team. Why would I let hypotheticals in my locker room? I wasn't going there. I think our team did a great job handling that."

Favre originally faxed his letter requesting reinstatement to the league on Tuesday of last week.

The 38-year-old Favre retired in early March at a tear-filled press conference, but has apparently had the itch to return for a 17th season. He met last Wednesday with Murphy in Mississippi.
