KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Police Chief James Corwin set the record straight on Friday about an incident that has blown up on the Internet.Police said a woman was at a QuikTrip convenience store at 103rd Street and Wornall Road on Saturday when a man handed her a piece of notebook paper with a name and phone number on it. One of the dangers that had the woman worried -- possible poisoning -- was unfounded but another was very real, officers said. A man is now facing charges because of it.Edward Blakley has been charged with intimidation and filing a false report because of what police said he did, and what they said he did to try to cover it up.The woman said she felt dizzy and her heart started racing the moment she touched the paper in the QT parking lot. She told police she worried it had been poisoned. The woman said she noticed the man was following her when she started driving away.Police said the woman went to a McDonald's restaurant on State Line Road for help, and the man came in after her saying, "Sorry, I never did ask if you were married." The man then left and the woman called police. The chief wrote on his blog that the drugging scenario is similar to an e-mail urban legend. It was something the victim said she read a couple of years ago.Police speculate what she was experiencing was a panic attack."It is highly, highly unlikely that there is a man out there handing pieces of paper to women to drug them and render them ill," Corwin said. "The victim did the right thing by getting to a public place and calling police."Police said they think Blakley was just coming on to the woman, but following her led to the intimidation charge. Later in the day, Blakley filed a hit-and-run report that police said he later admitted was an attempt to explain why he gave the woman his information and followed her. That led police to charge him with filing a false report.
