KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A mother and her daughter are defending against allegations that the mother burned her son with Down's Syndrome with an iron."From what I'm hearing from my mother, I don't think they have her side of story right," the daughter, who did not want to reveal her identity, said.Helen Settles, 41, the mother of the man, is accused by Jackson County prosecutors of burning her son. Prosecutors said Settles' son attends Hickman Mills High School, where a teacher said the teen complained of pain from an injury. A closer look by school officials revealed a second-degree burn to his forearm and the teen told the school nurse his mother burned him with an iron during an argument."They were saying she intentionally burned him, which it was just an accident," Settles' daughter said.Settles daughter said her mother was putting the iron away, when the teen reached up at the same time and was burned. She said her mother would never intentionally hurt anyone."She's great with my kids. My grandchildren are crazy about her," Settles daughter said. "She's a good mother."Settles is being held tonight on $100,000 bond in Jackson County jail, while her son was taken out of the home in January.
