1 Killed In 2-Car Crash On 152 Highway

2 Others Injured In Wreck

Two cars were involved in a fatal crash on 152 Highway near Green Hills Road, police said.

The wreck happened just after 2 p.m. Monday. Police said a 45-year-old Liberty man was killed and two others were injured.

Police said a man driving an SUV eastbound on 152 Highway lost control of his vehicle and crossed over the median and hit another car. Investigators said the driver of the car was killed, but a 5-month-old boy in a child seat was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The SUV driver was taken to an area hospital, but was released from the hospital Monday night.

Investigators said they will be returning to the stretch of 152 Highway at Green Hills to see if there is additional evidence of any other factors that might have played a role in the accident.

Police said weather was a contributing factor, because the lane the SUV started off in was slick and the grassy median was frozen, prevented the soil from slowing down the SUV, making the impact worse than it might have been otherwise.

Police said it will be a few days before they can say if the weather was the only contributing factor.

"We are going to look at the human factors involved with all the drivers," Kansas City police Sgt. Bill Mahoney said. "Other drivers that were in the area at the time are also a possibility. Mechanical defect to a vehicle are always a possibility. These are things that in the next few days we are going to be looking at and either making note of or excluding."

Police also said the fact the 5-month-old sustained only minor injuries is a testament to the effectiveness of car seats. Mahoney said a properly installed car seat gives far better protection in most wrecks for a child than a seat belt does for an adult.
