Police ID Victim From Merriam Hit-And-Run
Investigators Find Driver, Vehicle Involved In Crash

MERRIAM, Kan. -- Police said they have identified the vehicle and the person connected to a fatal hit-and-run that happened overnight.Police have identified the victim as 59-year-old Jack D. Canada of Merriam.Canada was hit near the corner of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Goodman Drive in Merriam. Police have not said where they found the SUV or truck.Merriam police told KCTV5's Matt Stewart that a friend's car hit Canada as he stood on the street in front of his house, but how it happened remains a mystery.A neighbor across the street found the victim's body last night, police said. The neighbor told Stewart that after the Super Bowl, he went to take out the trash and spotted his neighbor lying on the street.The man said his neighbor was dead so he called police.Investigators said the victim and a friend returned home from watching the Super Bowl at another location when someone Canada knew hit him and left the scene. It's not clear if the person knew he had hit the victim.The driver has been identified but is not in custody. Authorities are waiting for autopsy results to determine whether charges will be filed.
