UPDATED: 7:17 pm CST February 3, 2010

A man has surrendered after police were involved in a barricade situation near Nowlin Middle School in Independence on Wednesday afternoon.

The man was taken into custody at about 5 p.m., KCTV5's Betsy Webster reported. Police said the suicidal person was armed and in a house near 27th Terrace and Hardy Avenue.

Webster said two area schools are no longer on lockdown and students have been allowed to go home for the day.

Police had established a perimeter around the house involved and were not allowing anyone near. Webster said a tactical team was negotiating with the man.

Police officials said the man told them he has a high-powered rifle, but he does not want to hurt anyone. Investigators said the man called his parents at about 2:45 p.m., telling them he was suicidal. He said he would shoot police if they tried to intervene.

Two area schools were put on lockdown until a perimeter could be established around the house.
