Police Standoff Ends In Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A man has surrendered after police were involved in a barricade situation near Nowlin Middle School in Independence on Wednesday afternoon.The man was taken into custody at about 5 p.m., KCTV5's Betsy Webster reported. Police said the suicidal person was armed and in a house near 27th Terrace and Hardy Avenue.Webster said two area schools are no longer on lockdown and students have been allowed to go home for the day.Police had established a perimeter around the house involved and were not allowing anyone near. Webster said a tactical team was negotiating with the man.Police officials said the man told them he has a high-powered rifle, but he does not want to hurt anyone. Investigators said the man called his parents at about 2:45 p.m., telling them he was suicidal. He said he would shoot police if they tried to intervene.Two area schools were put on lockdown until a perimeter could be established around the house.
