Waldo Neighbors Say They Have Seen Serial Rapist

A serial rapist has residents of Waldo on edge and some residents are saying they think they've met the rapist at some point.

Kansas City police released a sketch of the rapist after working with victims to get an accurate description of the man. A pair of women were raped in separate occasions over the weekend and police think two rapes in the fall may also be related.

Mark Mesenheimer said he saw the sketch of the possible rapist on KCTV5.com and said he was suddenly reminded of an encounter two weeks ago when he invited a man inside his house and loaned him money.

"It was just this chilling experience when I looked at the picture on your Web site," Mesenheimer said to KCTV5's Betsy Webster. "This guy comes up to my door and says he's my new neighbor, and I knew that house had been open for a while. So I got kind of excited and think, 'Oh, this is nice, I'm going to have a new neighbor.' And he says, 'But, hey, I locked my keys and my wallet, and I need a locksmith. Could you just spare a few dollars?'"

Thursday Mesenheimer said he went by the house the man said he was moving into and saw it was still for sale, which prompted him to call police. Mesenheimer said police told him they had heard a similar story several times this week.

"They told me he hit a number of spots in town," Mesenheimer said. "They had said to me they don't know if the two cases are connected, but they're not ruling it out."

Carla Torres lives near one of the victims of this weekend's rapes. She said she has been on edge.

"I'm still sleeping with all the lights on in my house except the kids' rooms," Torres said. "I'm constantly peeking out the blinds whenever I hear anything."

Torres said she had spoken with one of the victims two months ago, before she was raped, about being careful in light of the rapist.

"I vividly recall a couple months ago when I ran out to my car at night when she was coming home from work," Torres said. "We had talked about the Waldo rapist out and about and that they hadn't caught him yet, and she had reminded me,'You need to be careful.'"

The man police are looking for is described as a black man, 6 feet tall, 250 pounds, with acne-scarred cheeks, bad breath, smelling of exhaust, with a deep, smooth voice. Anyone with information on the man is asked to call the TIPS hot line at 816-474-TIPS.
