Kansas City, Kan., fire crews found a man dead inside a smoke-filled basement with a smoldering mattress fire.

During the check, one fireman checked the adjoining townhome at 1331 N. 77th St. and detected smoke in the structure. Crews had to force entry into the structure and found the basement filled with smoke.

Fire crews found a smoldering mattress in the basement and, shortly after, a man. The man was taken out of the townhome, but was determined to be dead. The man was 53.

The damage to the structure is estimated at $10,000.
