INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Church officials at the Community of Christ Church in Independence held a prayer service for the victims in a child sex ring involving five members of the Mohler family and the suspects, some of whom were members of the church. The Community of Christ Church invited people from the community to come in and pray Tuesday night. About 60 people came to the service and many said they were still searching for answers in a story that seems to get worse by the day.The Mohler name is known well throughout the Community of Christ Church, many attending the service said."I was dumbfounded," Community of Christ member Brad Speaks said. "I was stunned because I recognized the name."Speaks said he used to go to the same church as David Mohler in Lamoni, Iowa.Community of Christ officials say David, his brother Jared and his father, Burrell Mohler Sr. were all lay ministers at their respective churches -- as volunteers."None of them had leadership roles in their church, meaning they weren't pastors," Community of Christ spokeswoman Linda Booth said.Community of Christ international headquarters is located in Independence, and the church opened the doors to their temple Tuesday and those who came lit candles and prayed."There's a lot of disbelief," Community of Christ member Diane Kyser said. "How did this happen? There's some sort of recovery going on as we talk inside ourselves during these difficult times and try to sort it out. The Community of Christ believes all of us are of worth and there's something inside all of us God loves."Tuesday's vigil lasted two hours.Community of Christ officials said the church will minister the three Mohler members through their trial and beyond.
