GLADSTONE, Mo. -- Some area tenants woke up to a different kind of alarm on Monday -- a smoke alarm.Fewer than a dozen tenants of an apartment complex will have to find somewhere else to stay for the night and maybe longer after smoke consumed their building just before 9:30 a.m. Fire officials said smoke filtered through a six-unit apartment building at the Kendallwood Apartments on Antioch Road.Sgt. Richard King from the Gladstone Police Department said the fire might have started in the basement and quickly spread. King said there were no reports of actual flames, but firefighters had to tear into walls and soak the units to make sure there wasn't any fire."The AC kicked on and smoke started coming out of the vents so I got my daughter and then I cam back and got my wife," said tenant Lonnie Carpenter.Fire officials said there were no injuries. No dollar amount has been given for the damage.
