RAY COUNTY, Mo. -- A passenger from a vehicle that police were attempting to pull over died when the car lost control.

Missouri Highway Patrol officials said they attempted to pull over a vehicle near New Garden Road, near Highway 10, at around 9:25 p.m. Sunday after a disturbance when the driver lost control of the vehicle, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned.

The passenger, Stephen Harris, 20, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Brian Phelps, 21, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., of the vehicle fled the scene on a foot, police said.
