KCTV5 had its cameras rolling on Thursday morning inside Milton Moore Elementary School when tempers flared between two 14-year-old girls.

"This school is too much for me and my kids," said parent Kimberly Stafford. "I've got a second grader who comes home every day crying because of what goes on in this school."

Two moms told KCTV5's Eric Chaloux that they were at the school to talk to the principal about a group of violent students when the skirmish broke out in the hallway.

"I'm glad we came up here today to see that fight," said parent Rochelle Tate. "I'm glad. I'm going to keep an eye on my son from now on."

Kansas City police said there have been two assaults at the school this year. The district said they don't keep numbers on police calls to campuses.

"Our schools are safe," said district spokesman Andre Riley. "This is a clear demonstration of how safe our schools are. If there was as dispute with students, our staff stepped in and acted appropriately. There was no violence."

The district handles its own security. The teachers union said there are about 60 violent incidents at Kansas City public schools each week.

"We were hearing from teachers at this school and other schools that they were very concerned the halls were out of control and the kids were out of control," said teachers union president Andrea Flinders. "They were concerned about the general safety of the building."

The teachers feel the spike in violence is the result of the district shifting schools to be kindergarten through eighth grade schools. Parents who spoke to KCTV5 agreed.

"It's not safe," one parent said. "They need those seventh and eighth graders out of here and need more security."

KCTV5's Eric Chaloux contacted Kansas City School Board members with the question

"Do you feel safety needs to be addressed in the schools? "

"Safety is a constant concern." School Board member Joel Pelofsky said.
