Investigation Near Missouri City Could Take Week

The investigation into a massive cache of possible stolen property in rural Clay County is so big that detectives could be sorting through shipping containers for at least a week.

On Wednesday, a man claiming to be the property's owner contacted KCTV5, saying the items were not stolen.

KCTV5 spoke with the man who said he is the owner of the property. He has not been arrested, but he has hired an attorney. The man said he can provide receipts for all of the items on his property and he has the titles to 35 of the cars.

The man said he owned several rental properties and the items in the shipping containers were from rehabbing houses.

The investigation began on Tuesday when Clay County officials responded to a report of shots being fired at a dog that attacked a goat, police said. But when officers arrived in the 200 block of Broadway Road, they found several shipping containers filled to the brim.

"They were stuffed with everything from a commercial oven to refrigerators," said Capt. Shauna Craven, of the Clay County Sheriff's Department.

The containers were so full that deputies said it will take at least a week to sort through them. After removing six cars that police believe are stolen, officers are trying to determine if other items on the property are stolen goods.

A man and woman were arrested in connection with the case. Jayne C. Kasten has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the case. Her court appearance is Thursday.

"This is just the icing on the cake," Craven said. "We have to get inside to see what's in that cake."

There is a house on the property, but deputies said it would be hard to imagine anyone living there because the second floor could cave in.

On Tuesday night, deputies removed six cars from the property that they said had been reported stolen.
