New Details Emerge In Leavenworth Child Death

New information was learned Monday when a Leavenworth mother made her first appearance in court on charges of aggravated endangering a child.

During her hearing, the Leavenworth County prosecutor accused Monica Rivera of hiding from police by using trash bags to cover up where she was, inside a car parked in a garage..

Earlier in October, Rivera's boyfriend, Jason Jones, was charged with murder resulting from child abuse.

The charge filed against Rivera said she recklessly put her child in harm's way when she left him in her boyfriend's care.

Rivera's parents left her bond hearing without her and without comment after a judge revealed publicly that part of the basis for the charge against her was that she violated a court order issued before her son's death that forbade her from allowing Jones to have contact with her son.

Rivera spoke briefly at a vigil for her son, Gabriel, earlier this month to thank his head start teachers and others for attending.

Rivera was charged on Friday and Monday the prosecution said she agreed to turn herself in but did not follow through.

The judge in the case set Rivera's bond at $200,000, saying it was higher than usual because if the allegations in the charge were true, then she had already violated one court order, which made him question whether she would show up for required court hearings in this case.
