KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A rash of car break-ins in Kansas City's Crossroads district is frustrating residents who said they don't feel like anything is being done about it."For me the biggest thing was shock. I couldn't believe it had happened again," Stuart Hall resident Brian Laorangroch said.Laorangroch lives in a loft at Stuart Hall at 21st Street and Central Avenue. Wednesday morning he said he went out to his truck and found his passenger window had been smashed in. "It's all glass again," Laorangroch said.Laorangroch said his care has been targeted four times in the last eight months. One time a thief took his stereo and another time the thief took his license plate.Laorangroch said he wrote a letter to other tenants to see if anyone else had been victimized by thieves. Within hours, he said, more than 10 residents replied."Right now in downtown, at least in this area, we have a major problem with car break-ins," Laorangroch said.Statistics from the Kansas City Police Department confirm there have been multiple car break-ins in this area over the past eight months."I think it has to do with a lack of patrols from the Kansas City Police Department," Stuart Hall owner John Bennett said.Hall said he and other owners have petitioned police to increase their presence in the area. Bennett has put up security cameras and shares the video with police, but said it hasn't stopped these thieves from targeting this area."By not doing anything about it and not seriously pursuing these criminals, we are giving a strong signal to these thieves encouraging them to break in again and again and again," Hall said. "People living downtown need to use common sense; it's a great place to live and work, but it's still a city and it comes down to having some street sense."Phone calls to the Kansas City Police Department were not returned.Hall said one possible solution is to add a gate to the parking lot. Hall said he'd have to charge for parking and that might turn off some residents. Hall said he plans on sending a letter to tenants Friday encouraging them not to leave any of their valuables in their car.
