PLATTE CITY, Mo. -- Charges have been filed against a man and a woman accused of killing a truck driver at a Platte City truck stop in 2008 as part of a multi-state crime spree. In September of 2008, Valentin Kirilchuk of Springfield, Mo., was found dead inside a truck stop bathroom just off of Interstate 29.Thursday Platte County prosecutors charged John Hughes and his girlfriend, Dana Tutor, with murder for Kirilchuk's killing.According to court documents, the crime spree began in late August 2008 in Zanesville, Ohio, where Hughes stabbed a man to death and then stole his guns and car. The paire ditched the murdered man's car in Kentucky and called Tutor in Mississippi to pick him up.Investigators said the couple went to Boonsville, Ark., picked up friends and then headed toward Utah to avoid authorities. As they drove north through Missouri, police said they stopped at a rest stop north of Platte City to rob a trucker.Officials said Tutor lured a man into the restroom while Hughes pretended to be on the phone. Investigators said Hughes then pulled out a stolen gun and tried to rob Kirilchuk. The charges said Kirilchuk fought back, and court documents said Hughes admitted to shooting him in the head. Police said the pair took his money and drove away. The pair was later stopped in York, Neb., for driving drunk. Officers there saw Hughes had a warrant for murder in Ohio and shipped him back to face charges there.Crime analysts took the gun found with Hughes and found the rest stop victim's DNA on it, linking Hughes and Tutor to the Platte County killing, according to Platte County prosecutors.Truckers who use the Platte County rest stop said they do feel vulnerable and wonder what they would have done."I see a guy in the bathroom, might be able to take him," Georgia-based trucker Mike Smith said. "But if a woman lures you in and the guy has a gun, that's a totally different situation.""Mind your business and be careful when anyone's trying to lure you into anything," St. Joseph trucker Bryan Brown said.Hughes is currently serving a life sentence in Ohio for murder while Tutor is in a Mississippi jail for forgery.Hughes and Tutor will be extradited to Platte County to face murder charges and will be held on a $1 million bond.
