LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The faces in the photographs in the Cultural Center on the Haskell Indian Nations University campus provide a glimpse into the past for future generations. On Wednesday night, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution to offer reconciliation and an official government apology to Native Americans for "hurtful choices of the past.""As a Lakota, we are very compassionate people," said Haskell student Isaiah Stewart. "This would be a step in the right direction.""It's a first step in righting wrongs -- broken treaties will be honored again," said another student, Trevor Mohawk. "That means a lot to Indian people."But an apology might not heal all the wounds."I don't see it as something as a fix to everything," said student Jodi Voice. "It will be respected, but that's about it."Stewart hopes when he leaves college to go back to the reservation to teach that an apology would be a good new chapter in the history of Native American relations."This step of apology of forgiveness will help them have more of an open heart as to the next generation," he said.Click here to see a copy Sen.
