LENEXA, Kan. -- Protesters of a plan to use sharpshooters to kill deer in an effort to thin the population at Shawnee Mission Park, came out in force to a Johnson County Parks meeting Wednesday. There were tears and anger at the meeting by numerous people who spoke during the public comment section of the regularly scheduled meeting. Those who oppose the plan had plenty to say it."Death is final goodbye and it's terrifying," one woman said."As rational men, how do you say illegal to trap, but OK to kill?" another woman said."It's laziness and the most violent method out there," a third woman said. There were more than a dozen people who opposed the decision, but just one who was in support of the plan. An Overland Park man said he thought the board made the right decision and volunteered to help with the hunt as an archer. The man asked when he would be notified of when and how to hunt. The board didn't answer, sparking some rowdiness in the crowd. One man was escorted out of the meeting. The board said the hunt will start Oct. 1.
