Suspect Charged As Persistent Offender

A Kansas City man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for stealing two televisions worth $700 from a Platte County Wal-Mart.

Michael D. Calvin, 43, received the sentence Thursday after being found guilty in June.

"Judge Lee Hull came down hard on this defendant, but he deserves all of it," Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said. "The defendant has been in and out of prison for nearly 25 years for crimes like robbery and battery."

The normal maximum sentence for stealing more than $500 is seven years in prison. But Zahnd charged Calvin as a persistent offender to increase his maximum prison term.

The Missouri Division of Probation and Parole did a pre-sentencing investigation.

The stolen televisions came from the Wal-Mart at 8551 North Boardwalk Ave. on May 28, 2008. Police said Calvin was seen at the side of the store loading the televisions into a car.

Wal-Mart security personnel later identified Calvin from surveillance video. His identity was confirmed by an employee of the Independence Wal-Mart as a man who had been arrested for a similar offense at that store on April 29, 2008. Calvin currently faces charges in Jackson County for that alleged theft.

"We hope career criminals get the message-even non-violent, property crimes will be punished with heavy sentences if you won't stop committing felonies," Zahnd said.

Calvin has been convicted of four prior felonies and was first sentenced to prison in 1984.
