Some of the loud bangs in Overland Park were snuffed out on Saturday as 10 police officers combed the streets, solely devoted to fireworks enforcement.KCTV5's Greg Adeline rode along with one officer, who said fireworks patrol isn't always easy."You know, sometimes you just feel like the bad guy," Overland Park police Officer Ken Braden said.During the ride-along, one homeowner was cited for using smoke bombs."The ordinance in Overland Park says no possession of sparklers and smoke bombs, things like that," Braden said. "The ordinance covers those things as well -- you just can't have it."The fine for the homeowner's small stash of fireworks came to $200.At another house, Braden found five bags of fireworks and remnants littering the street."I have a family myself, and I understand how they feel," Braden said. "But the chief says zero tolerance, and that's it."
