KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An injured man was found outside a house near East 39th Street and Vineyard Road just before midnight on Thursday.

Someone had assaulted the man, leaving him with critical injuries, police said.

Another man was shot while in the same area but he took himself to the hospital for treatment before police had arrived. Officers said he was expected to recover.

Officers were still interviewing witnesses to determine what happened.
