Morning Blaze Tests Firefighters During Hot Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A fire at an apartment complex at 41st Street and Warrick tore through the property, destroying nearly everything.The blaze started around 10:15 a.m. on the front porch. Fire investigators have not yet determined how it started, but they don't think this was set intentionally.Preliminary reports indicate the fire may have started when a cigarette on the porch that ignited the fire.Fire officials said six to seven people were inside the building when the fire started.According to firefighters, one man smelled the smoke, saw the fire and woke everyone up.No one was hurt in the fire, but firefighters were exhausted after battling the fire while wearing their full gear in hot temperatures."When we first got here, as soon as I got off the rim it felt hot," Paul Milano, Kansas City firefighter, said. "I laid out the line to go in and right when we went in it was hot, real hot."Battallion Fire Chief Kevin Hunt said in cases like this he is on the lookout for his crew's safety."The guys actually stood up pretty well for how hot it is," Hunt said. "How we deal with the heat is they stay hydrated. The captains take real good care of their crews."
