SHAWNEE, Kan. -- A Shawnee, Kan., woman said a man selling items door to door robbed her at gunpoint. Residents in the quiet neighborhood near 50th and Park streets are used to seeing door-to-door sales people. On Tuesday, one area homeowner came home to find one of those workers in her basement.Police said the woman arrived home from work and found the subject with a gun in her basement. The suspect led the victim upstairs and made her sit at a table for a while. He asked the woman for money and jewelry and eventually left the home with jewelry and credit cards.Police Capt. Bill Hisle said the frightened woman did exactly what she was told to do. Alexander Gavlitta, 21, was later arrested at an Overland Park, Kan., hotel. Police said they were able to recover the stolen items."In Shawnee anybody going door to door should have a business license and a solicitation permit,” Hisle said. "You should ask for that before ever even talking to the people. And if they don't have either one, by all means you should call police and we'll check them out."
