Police Look For Man In Bookstore Attack
Teen Says He Was Assaulted In Bathroom Stall
Police said a popular Overland Park, Kan., bookstore has become a crime scene.Law enforcement officers are on the lookout for a suspected sexual predator after a teenager said he was attacked at the Borders Bookstore, near 91st Street and Metcalf Avenue. The teen was so embarrassed by the attack that he waited a week to tell his parents, police said.According to the police report, the 16-year-old boy and his father were looking at books when the teen decided to use the restroom. The boy told police another man followed him in, shoved him into a stall and tried to sexually assault him. But he cowered down in defense as the stranger pleasured himself."The man overpowered him, from what the kid said," said Overland Park Police spokesman Jim Weaver. "He was just plain scared. That's why I think it took him a week to tell his parents. Because he was scared, embarrassed, frightened, traumatized."The boy told police that he only caught a fleeting glimpse of the suspect. He didn't get a good description of the man, so police plan to look at surveillance video to get a clearer picture."It's unfortunate these predators come out and stalk these men and women," Borders shopper Barry Grenyo said. "Normally you think of it as tranquil, convenient, enjoyable place to come and now you've got this in your mind."Overland Park police say this kind of bathroom attack on a teen in such a public place is rare in their city.Police urge anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hot Line at 816-474-TIPS (8477), text TIP452 plus a message to CRIMES (274637) or submit a tip online at kccrimestoppers.com.
