FAIRWAY, Kan. -- Police in Fairway, Kan., are looking for the estranged husband of a painter who was shot in the head while working on a house in the town on Monday morning. The woman died at an area hospital overnight.Police said they are looking for Franklin Grammer Jr., the victim's estranged husband, who was last seen leaving the area in a blue 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup truck with Oklahoma license plates 522 MTH..Johnson County Med-Act spokesman Jeff Johnson said a woman was painting outside a house at 6247 Glenfield Drive at 10:30 a.m. when a man shot her in the head. The woman has been identified as Betty Grammer, who witnesses said had come from Oklahoma this summer with the suspect to spend time fixing up houses in the Fairway area.Peter Hyde said he and his wife, Jami, had been outside playing with their 3-year-old son, just minutes before the shooting.Jami Hyde said she called 911 and yelled for her husband, who was in the shower. They peeked outside and saw the painter lying in a pool of blood."I went back outside and saw Betty on the ground and I sat down with her and brushed her and told her to hang on," Jami Hyde said. "It was horrible. We were blessed we weren't out front. Our child wasn't out front. If we're out there five minutes later, we might not be here."We knew who the guy who shot the woman was, because he'd worked on the house across the street, Peter Hyde said. After the shooting, Hyde said he saw the victim's estranged husband walk away holding a long handgun."He was just walking across the yard with a pistol, like the Wild West days," he said.Paramedics took Betty Grammer to the hospital in extremely critical condition. The other two men painting the house were not hurt.Officers closed down the streets for an hour afterward and brought in police dogs, hoping to find the shooter.
