Parents Look For Answers In Infant's Death

Mother Rushes Child From Day Care To Hospital

A 7-month-old baby is dead and the child's parents are looking to the infant's day care provider for answers.

Aniyah Boone died on Saturday after being taken from Debbie's Day Care in Merriam, Kan., to the hospital when workers at the day care noticed that the baby was having difficulty breathing.

The day care called the mother at work and then she and a worker from the daycare took the baby to the Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Aniyah was eventually transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital where she died later from what Boone said was a lacerated liver.

"It was split in two," said the Nick Carter, the baby's father. "As if it had a lot of pressure on it."

Merriam police and the Department of Health and Environment, the group that oversees day cares in the state, are investigating but until a full autopsy is complete, they can not determine the cause of death, or say if foul play was involved.

Police said a preliminary autopsy revealed that the baby's liver could have been crushed during CPR. They are awaiting more tests.

On Saturday morning, Boone had videotaped her daughter's first crawl. She said the baby was fine and healthy, but by Saturday afternoon she was rushing her to the hospital.

"They called me at work to tell me Aniyah wasn't waking up like she normally should," Boone said.

The owner of Debbie's Day Care, Debbie Devault, did not return phone calls. The Department of Health and Environment, which oversees day cares in the state, ordered an immediate suspension of its license on Tuesday and closed the day care during the investigation.

The owner had voluntarily closed the doors on Monday after Aniyah's death.

"If they know something say it," Boone said. "Even if it was an accident. Or if it's on purpose. (They should say something) because it's just not right what happened to our daughter."
